Microscopic Surgery Q & A

What is microscopic surgery?

Microscopic surgery uses highly sensitive surgical microscopes and other special tools to repair damage to your spine caused by an injury or illness. During microscopic surgery, Dr. Khurana makes very small incisions. As a result, there’s less risk of bleeding, bruising, or infection, allowing for quicker recovery.

What conditions can benefit from microscopic surgery?

At LA Spine Group, Dr. Khurana uses microscopic surgery to treat various conditions, including:

  • Herniated discs
  • Radiculopathy (compressed spinal nerves)
  • Spinal stenosis (narrowing of the spinal column)
  • Scoliosis (a spinal abnormality)

You might also benefit from microscopic surgery if you experience a vertebral fracture due to an accident or injury.

Am I a candidate for microscopic surgery?

To determine if you’re a candidate for microscopic surgery, Dr. Khurana reviews your medical records and asks about your symptoms, including where they occur, if they extend to other parts of your body, and whether activities like exercise or work make them worse.

Next, Dr. Khurana conducts a physical exam. He gently presses on your back and neck to pinpoint areas of swelling, redness, or sensitivity. Then, Dr. Khurana checks your muscle strength, reflexes, and range of motion. He might also order X-rays, an MRI, or a CT scan to rule out conditions like a fracture or a muscle strain.

Usually, Dr. Khurana recommends conservative treatments like spine injections, physical therapy, or over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medication. If these measures don’t relieve your symptoms or they get worse, you’re likely a candidate for microscopic surgery.

What does microscopic surgery involve?

Dr. Khurana performs microscopic surgery at a hospital or surgical center. Before the procedure begins, he administers local anesthesia, putting you to sleep.

Once you’re comfortable, Dr. Khurana makes a small incision over the area of your spine being treated. Then, he inserts special tools and a highly sensitive surgical microscope through the incision. Dr. Khurana uses the microscope to guide his tools. He cuts away the diseased or damaged tissue in your spine, removes the microscope, and closes the incision.

After microscopic surgery, you stay in the hospital for several days. Take your medication as prescribed and follow Dr. Khurana’s instructions carefully to speed up the recovery process.
